Abstract

A user survey was carried out in the Medical Library, University of Sri Jayewardenepura to assess the services offered at present, to find out the usage patterns of the existing resources and services in order to identify the gaps in present services. Survey method was used. Questionnaires and library statistics were used as data collection instruments. Random sampling was applied to select the sample from three batches of undergraduate students. The survey asked students to state the purpose of library visit, usage of library resources and services, problems in using library resources and services and students‟ suggestions to improve the existing services and to initiate new services. Results indicated that there is a significant difference among the usage patterns of different year levels in terms of literature searching and ILL requests. Unawareness and inadequate computer facilities were the major reasons indicated for underutilization of CD-ROMs and Document Delivery services. It is hoped to consider these findings in future development plans.
