Abstract

The first proper library index was prepared by Sir Anthony Panizzi in 1941. Union catalogue, which is a collection of several library indexes is a product of the Library of Congress. Sri Lanka Science Council (UNICAST - 1977), Development Information Centre (INICDEV - 1978), and the Central Environmental Authority (UNICEB - 1993) have developed several union catalogues. It is a task of the National Library to collect all these and create the National Union Catalogue. That is a necessity to properly function the library services of the country.
